"Making parking a little easier for disabled people"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Xrays & Scans

(as a carer),

My son is profoundly disabled mentally & physically,  approximately 6 months ago I took my son to Crosshouse Hospital  and parked in the disabled car park , I hadn’t noticed the blue badge was out of date.

My son needed a break from the treatment he was receiving so we went out to the car to get his snack. I was shocked to find a traffic warden putting a fine on my sons motability car, they could clearly see he needed to be parked in the special parking area but they just asked me to give them his blue badge and off they went.

I read the PCN and left it inside the car and we went back inside the hospital to continue my son's treatment, when we came back out there was another fine on the car, however I won the appeal and the second fine was cancelled.

Two weeks ago we were back at the same car park , my son had to go for an ultrasound  scan and we were running late and I forgot to check if the blue badge was fully visible. Unfortunately it had slipped into the front windscreen and we received another fine for £100.

I am an unpaid carer and my son cannot work so lives on benefits so this is a huge amount for us to pay out , I appealed the fine but they rejected this and said I had parked illegally three times in total. I find it unbelievable that someone like my son should be given a fine for parking at the hospital just because the blue badge was not fully visible.

Why can’t they check the registration of the car? Surely there must be a way to make parking a little easier for disabled people and their carers ,this is so unfair and ARA parking services don’t seem to care .

Dear Carer & disabled son

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to share feedback on the difficulties you have encountered whilst using the disable parking bays at University Hospital Crosshouse.

I am very sorry that this has been your experience. I can only imagine how frustrated you must have felt.

Although this is not something we are able to influence, we have contacted the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, who monitor the car park at University Hospital Crosshouse, to share your feedback with them.

Kind Regards

Pamela

Update posted by Carer & disabled son (a carer)

I’m sorry but this response is not helpful as the Ayrshire roads Alliance have declined both my appeals regarding the PCN they issued. It seems to me disabled people that need room to get in and out of their car are being discriminated against. If you are able bodied you can park anywhere in the hospital car park without buying a parking ticket but disabled people attending hospital appointments have to show their blue badge, and if the badge slips down ARA will not even take into consideration the person accused is disabled and has a blue badge. They should be ashamed. I am an unpaid carer and this fine cost me half of my weekly carers allowance.
