"Daughter has very little speech"

About: Children's Specialist Health Services / Children's Speech & Language Therapy

(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter is 3 years old, I have been raising concerns with the health visitor and the nursery  regarding her speech for around a year and a half now. My daughter can say few worlds, I have taken her to the dentist and she has been found to have a lip tie. She has twice now had ulcers in her mouth, to the point she wouldn’t even take fluids and I had to syringe feed her water.

I have been told that a lip tie doesn’t affect speech, which is fair enough. However there has been no assessment done on my child, there have  been two referrals gone to speech and language the first around 8 months ago, and it has not even been acknowledged.

Regardless of the reason my daughter has limited speech, she is still entitled to have an assessment and strategies provided to parents to assist her with her speech.

I was told that my daughter won’t be seen until she is three. I am having to pay privately to see a paediatrician in order for my daughter to be assessed.

I find it absolutely shocking that professionals without actually physically seeing a child can write them off by saying that a lip tie doesn’t affect speech.

I apologise if our acknowledgement letter has caused offence it was not intended do so so. We state that we are busy on the letter so that families are aware that there will be a period of time to wait for an appointment during which time we suggest to families to contact our Advice Line for support during the waiting period.

In order to look into your child's referral for speech and language therapy can you please contact me on 01698 753744 so that I can get some more information from you regarding your child so that I can investigate when/what is happening with the referral.

I look forward to hearing from you.
