"Neurology provisions in Lanarkshire"

About: Adult Health & Support Services / Community Stroke Neuro Rehabilitation Team

(as a service user),

I have had MS since 2007 and attended the rehabilitation team at Udston Hospital back and forth for help to keep me mobile. As a result of regular spasms my range of movement in my legs has reduced, resulting in balance and walking.

At my recent visit it was decided in their professional opinion that I would benefit from Botox injection to relax my calf and ankle in an attempt to improve my quality of life. Unfortunately they can provide Botox to Stroke patients only. This seems insane. You have invested in a community service to assist people with neurological conditions, as well as training individuals to provide a known helpful treatment but have limited this provision to only people with one condition, therefore meaning that I now need to wait for a referral to reach Queen Elizabeth Hospital Glasgow and travel further when finally seen.

Surely you must agree that it is very inconvenient and unnecessary to have to attend another hospital for a treatment when I'm already attending a unit that has staff qualified to provide the service.

I know the NHS is trying to save money and the hospitals are in different districts but ultimately it all comes out of NHS Scotland's budget. Providing this service, in my case, could save NHS Lanarkshire money . Currently it costs over £500 to prescribe me medication on a regular basis whereas Botox costs £100-£350 per treatment. That's considering only one of my medications for the ongoing spasm side effects.

Surely patients should all be given the same opportunity for the best standard of holistic care that can given, taking into account that MS is a debilitating condition where travelling isn't always easy or possible.

Why can't the trusts provide a level playing field for all patients?
