"Disgusting waste of time."

The GP referred my 7 year old to CAMHS as I believe he has ARFID, an eating disorder.

After a 30 minute phone call to take information I received 2 more phone calls to say they can’t help because

1. ARFID is a new eating disorder and they have nobody in their eating disorder team who deals with it. This is really not my son’s fault and surely if I know about it and children have died from it they should train someone up and/or refer him to someone who does know about treatments!

2. It’s not a mental health condition! Yes it is. He has a fear of choking so barely eats due to his anxiety!

So they have told me to speak to a dietitian/paediatrician even though CAMHS are supposed to deal with children, mental health and eating disorders.

CAMHS practitioners should be ashamed. They simply slam the door in your face if they are not sure what to do or if your child doesn’t fit into their categories for help. What a joke!

My name is Kerry Bowles,

I am the Team Coordinator for the CAMHS Eating Disorder Service. I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about the difficulties you have been faced with when trying to access help and support through our service. I am sorry to hear that following the telephones conversations you had, the information you have been given has not been helpful or accurate and understandably made you feel as though CAMHS cannot help. This is not an experience that I would like anyone to have when seeking help and support. The CAMHS Eating Disorder Service are currently developing an ARFID Service within Lincolnshire Partnership Foundation Trust. It is in its early stages at present, with plans to grow this over the next 5 years. I would really like to speak to you to gain a better understanding of your experience and concerns to see if there is something we can do to support you and your child.

If you would like to contact me, please could you email me at lpft.camhs-eds@nhs.net, alternatively please call 01476 464949 to request a call back from myself.

Kerry
