"No care or empathy because it was my fault I was there"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine

(as a service user),

This is the first of me being strong enough to make this statement.  I suffered a very dark depression beginning of last year. I was taken to Victoria hospital , not sure of ward . This ward , apart from a mental health nurse , was an awful place to be . I was left for hours without anybody coming into the room or getting water. Some of the nurses did not bother to discuss private matters quietly including other patients' private information,  including mine. One nurse's attitude to me felt degrading and upsetting , no care or empathy because it was my fault I was there .

Dear Reddevilsgo1

Thank you for your strength in sharing your story about your recent experience on a general medicine ward at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. I am sorry you experienced these difficulties and am sure managers for those services will want to respond supportively. As a Clinical Services Manager with the adult mental health service, I was very sorry to read about your experience. I am glad you felt there was support from a mental health worker and hope you are able to access any ongoing support you need regarding your mental health. If you would like to talk to one of our mental health leadership team members in mental health services about your experience, please contact my Personal Assistant Ann Bain via 01334 696004 Ext. 56004 in order that we can take your details and arrange a call with you. Thank you.

Wishing you well.

Kind regards

Deon

Update posted by reddevilsgo1 (a service user)

Thank you for your reply, my main point in making this public was to try to make sure changes were made and that some form of empathy and understanding is felt by others who may find themselves on this ward and basic needs are met such as water, that the staff who sit on reception are conscious that patients can hear their conversations, and they at least check in from time to time.

Dear reddevilsgo1

I am sorry to hear of your experience, and appreciate it has been difficult for you to get in touch. To support you further, it would be helpful if you could get in touch with me directly with your details, so I can establish which ward at Victoria Hospital you were a patient on. I am very keen to hear from you and would appreciate the opportunity to review this further. I can be contacted via email, Jamie.Doyle@nhs.scot. I do hope to hear from you soon, so I can help you further and also review areas for improvement.

Kindest regards

Jamie Doyle
