"Exceptional person-centred care"

About: NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde / Home Birth Team

(as a service user),

I was looked after by the Glasgow Homebirth team from my booking appointment to the birth of my daughter in early 2023. I felt seen and heard and received exceptional person centered care. It confirmed my decision to accept my place to study midwifery.

After having gone through two placements as a student midwife, labour ward, and postnatal, I still go back to how my midwives treated me. They were incredibly professional but also made me feel like I was doing the most important thing in the world and they really made me feel safe and empowered. I really hope in as much as it is possible the majority of mums being looked after in Glasgow can receive the same kind of support I did.

I wonder what could be done to take some of the elements of the home birth experience to those giving birth in hospital which is the majority or even to encourage those who are green pathway to be made aware that it's a possibility. I know this is being done  in other health boards.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback on Care opinion. it was lovely to read that your positive experience has led you to study midwifery. I will pass on your kind words to the homebirth team who will be delighted to hear how their care in pregnancy labour and birth made you feel and how it has influenced a new career.

In Glasgow we have Alongside Midwifery Units in the PRM and QEUH and we have our Community Midwifery Units in the RAH, VOL and IRH. These provide women with the facilities to have midwife led care in labour similar to a homebirth whilst in the hospital setting. We speak about these birthing areas in our parent education classes and there is information on our websites.

May I take this opportunity to with you well in your studies and for the future.

Best Wishes

Elaine Drennan

Lead Midwife
