"I wasn't just treated as a patient, but as a person"

About: Cowal Community Hospital (formerly Dunoon General) / Accident & Emergency Gartnavel General Hospital / Xrays and Scans Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Cardiac Surgery Golden Jubilee National Hospital / Interventional Cardiology

(as a service user),

I was admitted from Dunoon A&E originally with fainting spells, heart block and bradycardia and was quickly diagnosed with likely cardiac sarcoidosis. I was then put on immunosuppressants and responded well to them. Whilst with you I went for a PET scan at the Gartnavel and eventually got taken to the Jubilee where I had a CMRI and then had a defibrillator fitted.I am a young person who had never really been in hospital before this and had been generally well - so this long stay was traumatic and challenging.

I have no words to describe the quality of care that was provided. I wasn't just treated as a patient, but as a person. The time I spent there was scary at times, and traumatic, and all the staff recognised what I was going through and did everything to support me. I felt so safe here care at all times, knowing I was being monitored 24/7 with friendly people on hand to help me with anything I was going through. It was also a huge support to my family to know I was so well looked-after.

It is not an exaggeration to say every single member of staff was lovely, attentive and cared for me wonderfully. I enjoyed the ward gossip more than I should have and started to feel like part of the family by the end of my stay. Despite it being a tough time - I do have some happy memories of laughs during my stay. I also saw during my time there that you offered the same standard of care to the 14 (!) other patients who went through the room when I was in there, often despite lots of challenges.

It is a tremendous source of comfort to me to know that such a compassionate and professional service is just down the road. The care I received was not only life-saving medically, but also helped me through a tough time and has made my recovery now I am home easier.
