"Not receiving any advice, help or communication"

About: Musgrove Park Hospital / Montacute North

(as a relative),

Insulin dependent diabetic on Montacute Ward preparing for amputation. Mostly the staff were friendly and efficient. The food has been appalling.

He needed to eat to balance insulin levels but was unable to eat more than a few spoonfuls of the main course as it was cold or too highly spiced. Survived on custard and porridge and biscuits (so no protein) . This caused a hypo and also left him delusional and weak from hunger.

We are now facing a return for an amputation and are not receiving any advice, help or communication from anyone on how to deal with this process when he won't be able to eat the food. No assessment done of how he will cope at home , or even if he will cope in a wheelchair.

He had several bouts of diarrhoea on the ward, caused by lack of food and meds and was scolded whilst being cleaned up by a HCA. He was left feeling so confused and degraded by the whole experience that he tried to escape the ward.

It truly scares both of us that we are going to have to face this again for the operation with no support and no assessment of what help we will need.

Thank you a for taking the time to leave feedback, I'm so sorry to hear that your experience was lacking and that we were unable to meet your loved ones dietary preferences.

It would be great to hear a bit more about what food was ordered and what choices you were offered to help us improve this service in the future. If you would like to contact me on my email address: emelie.james@somersetFT.nhs.uk, we could arrange a convenient time to chat about your loved ones stay.

I am hopeful that this would also allow us the opportunity to make arrangements to help you feel more reassured about a future admission,

Thank you once again for taking the time to write to us.

Emelie James
