"Will certainly feel safe if he ever needs to return"

About: Emergency Department / Minor Injuries University Hospital Wishaw / Trauma and Orthopaedics (14- 16)

(as a parent/guardian),

We visited A&E , University Hospital Wishaw recently. My son was playing football in The Scottish Cup Final (youth) at Fir Park. 5 mins before the end of the game, a tackle caused  him to fall awkwardly and resulted in a wrist fracture.

The staff that helped my son were brilliant.

A lovely therapist completed the initial assessment and stayed with him throughout. She was kind and funny , and supported him with the right balance of distracting him, reassuring him and telling him what was going to happen, always without scaring him.

The radiographer was friendly and very gentle, clearly recognising his level of pain and discomfort.

The Orthopaedic staff who came to re-align his arm for casting were also brilliant. They were calm and friendly, always making sure he was ok.

The porter who took him back to X-ray was chatty and told him all the football scores.

Back round to the lovely therapist who was again by his side, telling how well he had done, showing him his X-rays and just giving her time.

Thank you to all for their expert care and for making a horrible situation feel so much better. My son has never been in hospital or had an injury before. His first experience , despite the injury, was so positive and he will certainly feel safe if he ever needs to return in the future.

Dear heronpw47,

Thank you for sharing your experience of University Hospital Wishaw, Minor Injuries and Trauma and Orthopaedics.

I am so sorry to hear about your son's injury at his football final. What a worrying time it must have been for you both. I am so pleased to hear that all the staff were friendly and helpful towards you and your son. The person centred care that they gave him would have went a long way in reassuring you both and ensuring he was calm throughout his treatment.

I will ensure your kind words are passed on to the whole team who I am sure will get a real boost in hearing your feedback.

I hope your son is recovering well.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
