"Came in due to waters breaking early"

About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford) / Maternity

(as a service user),

Initially, we were very worried and scared, but the care provided was quick and good. However, communication started to break down, and suddenly we were informed about the need for an early c-section, which came as a surprise since no one had informed the doctor and anaesthesiologist about the minimal amount of water leakage. This lack of communication left us feeling uninformed and distressed and the plan then changed.

Subsequently, we were informed about a scheduled scan for the next day, but throughout the second day, we were only checked on twice (baby monitors no at 0900 and then again at 1600) with no basic observations being conducted. We had to remind the midwife about necessary antibiotics and even request lunch, only to discover there was a cafeteria we hadn’t been informed about earlier. This lack of basic communication made the experience unpleasant, and it seemed like nobody knew what was going on or who was responsible for our care.

However, things improved significantly on the second night when the night staff, particularly Midwife Louisa, took over. She was incredibly caring, informative, and knowledgeable. Unlike the previous day, she diligently carried out observations, addressing concerns about infection risks. She patiently answered all our questions, provided reassurance, and demonstrated thoroughness in her assessments and monitoring. We are immensely grateful for her exceptional care and dedication.

Dear CWP33

Thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with feedback from your recent experience at RDUH Wonford maternity services.

I am so pleased that when you were cared for by Louisa you felt grateful and reassured to be looked after by her as she provided exceptional care and demonstrated thoroughness in her assessments, knowledge, addressing your concerns and monitoring you effectively. I will ensure that she receives this lovely feedback.

I am so sorry that you felt that there was a lack of communication after your initial diagnosis leaving you feeling uninformed and that no one seemed to know what was happening with your care which made this experience unpleasant for you both. We take this feedback very seriously and we are always striving to improve our service.

If you would like to discuss this further please email me at joanna.black@nhs.net quoting user name CWP33 and I can investigate this further.

Thank you again for leaving this important feedback.

Kind regards

Jo
