"Colonoscopy at Victoria Hospital"

About: Victoria Hospital / General Medicine Victoria Hospital / General Surgery

(as the patient),

I had a colonoscopy at Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy recently. my appointment was in the afternoon.

I got my first pre-med then waited 2hours until I was taken into the Endoscopy suite and given further pre-med.

I have had about 6 colonoscopies over the last 20 years at Victoria and in Edinburgh and have never experienced pain before. The pain this time was terrible and I was wide awake through the procedure which took nearly 1 hour.

The nurses were friendly but nothing was done about my obvious signs of pain during the colonoscopy.

I recovered quickly and have had no problems since the colonoscopy but the memory of the pain wont go away soon.

Dear Angus99

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion. I was sorry to hear of the pain you endured during your colonoscopy. This clearly has been a very traumatic experience for you.

I have taken the opportunity to speak to the Clininical Nurse Manager who was very concerned to hear of your experience. She tells me that nursing staff have a key role in observing patients for pain during the procedure and monitoring this throughout.

She would be keen to look into the specifics of your case and to discuss the matter with you directly, to make sure that you feel confident should you require this procedure at any time in the future. Please contact me directly if you would like the opportunity to discuss this further.

Many thanks for your feedback

Regards

Louise Ewing

Update posted by Angus99 (the patient)

I attended a meeting with the Clinical Nursing Manager regarding my unhappy experience during a colonoscopy. The manager explained that since my last colonoscopy the procedure regarding painkillers/sedatives has changed and a lower dose of these is now given which caused me to be much more aware of the pain than I had been previously. She also said that she would update my notes so that if I had another colonoscopy the nurses/doctor would be aware of this and possibly give me a higher dose of drugs.

I am grateful for the way that all this was explained and hope that if I do need another colonoscopy I will be on Patient Opinion saying that there is nothing to worry about!

I am delighted to hear that the meeting went well and also to hear that the Clinical Nurse Manager has been able to identify a way of alerting others to your concern for the future. By adding information to your notes it should prompt staff to ask you about your experience and to discuss the options available at the time. Hopefully this will result in a much better experience next time.

We really want to hear people's feedback so that we can identify any areas where we can make things better.

Thank you for taking the time to post and to meet with staff.

Kind Regards

Louise
