"The timescales were amazing"

About: Fife Community Services / Rapid Cancer Diagnostic Service (RCDS)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

After a period of rapidly losing weight I decided to consult with my GP. I had various blood tests all which came back negative.  I am a celiac and again the blood tests did not show any abnormalities. My GP then referred me to the hospital for further tests.  At this point I did not know the tests were for cancer, I think my GP might have told me.  I was duly contacted by Ashley from the RCDS unit, she was brilliant and put my mind at ease.  Ashley explained everything in detail and booked the CT scan for me.  The timescales were amazing, in little over a week I was contacted, had my scan and given my results.  My only issue was that I had the scan on a Friday and (understandably) didn't get the result until the Monday.  This did make me fret over the weekend. However I do understand nothing could be done about that.  Everyone I came in contact with either by phone or in person was wonderful and displayed a very caring attitude.  Results all clear so I gave a huge sigh of relief.

Dear rcdsal66

My name is Murdina MacDonald, I am the lead nurse for RCDS. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am pleased to hear about the positive aspects of your journey and appreciate your constructive feedback. We understand the concern you felt during a period of rapid weight loss. It’s good to know that you consulted your GP promptly and that your initial blood tests, including those for coeliac disease, came back negative. We recognise that not being informed upfront that the tests were for cancer can be unsettling. Our Lead GP for RCDS will highlight the importance of ensuring our patients are informed about the reasons for their referrals. I am delighted to hear that Ashley was able to put your mind at ease and explained everything in detail. We will certainly pass on your kind words to her, as it is always encouraging to hear about the positive impact our staff have on patients. We strive to provide timely care and are pleased that this was your experience. I understand the anxiety you felt waiting over the weekend for your results. While we aim to provide results as quickly as possible, we appreciate your understanding that some delays are unavoidable. Your feedback about the caring attitude of everyone you came in contact with, whether by phone or in person, is greatly appreciated. It is our goal to provide compassionate care, and it’s heartening to hear that this was reflected in your experience.

I am relieved to hear that your results were all clear and wish you well in the future

Warm Regards

Murdina
