"Kindness and support received from staff"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Day Surgery Unit

(as the patient),

Very emotional and upset when I attended Day Surgery dept for Lumpectomy Operation recently.

The nurse that greeted me was amazing. She was very understanding about how I felt, she took the time to reassure me that I would be very well looked after and if I needed anything I just had to ask. The ward sister was also very kind, she saw I was upset and brought me a packet of tissues.

It’s these little things that matter when you are caring for patients who are anxious and nervous.

The Anaesthetist who spoke to me prior to my operation was also very kind and helped me settle with his reassurance, the Consultant also.

As I was taken to Theatre, the theatre nursing staff outside Theatre were very professional as they spoke kindly and told me to take my time and transfer to trolley when I was ready. They were very caring.

On my return to Day Surgery ward, the nursing and auxiliary staff were amazing. I was offered water, then tea and toast,  which a student nurse offered to make for me. It tasted so good after fasting for operation.

All the staff were constantly attending to the patient’s needs. The auxiliary staff never stopped, constantly disposing of used laundry, cleaning  and replenishing everything required for the next patient.

The nursing staff constantly monitoring patients and attending to their needs in a very kind and professional way whilst continually updating their patients notes.

The one very important  thing that I noticed about the staff in this ward is that it didn’t matter how busy they were, they made the effort to talk to the patients, to reassure them. Their empathy and professionalism shown towards the patients was excellent; including the student nurse who I initially thought was a qualified nurse. I could tell she was a very kind and keen student by her caring attitude and friendliness; also how she asked my nurse about something she was doing to ensure she understood.

Every single member of staff I was approached by, spoke to, saw, or cared for me on this day was kind, thoughtful, genuinely caring and exceptional.

Hi Polarisdp54,

I am Annette Shaw the ward manager of the unit and I am delighted to hear that your experience in the unit was very positive.

The staff always work above and beyond and they try to ensure that every patient is treated with kindness and consideration because patients are having a hard enough time facing surgery and recovery.

I will pass on your kind words to all the team and wish you well in your recovery.

Many Thanks.
