My father has had a drain in to remove bile from the liver. A week ago he accidentally pulled it out so hospital was contacted and a date was set for him to go and have an ultrasound scan.
Had the Ultrasound scan first thing and then had to go to the hot clinic. Nurse took bloods and sent them off and we waited for results.
About three hours later doctor had to chase the results of the scan, we didn’t mind waiting as we understand it's a busy place.
But here comes the frustration. After all results came back my father was told he’d need a CT scan and drain back in so again we waited for a free slot for this.
Dr then came in to say no we going to give antibiotics, send you home and bring you in on Wednesday again. So I asked when he’d be scanned again to make sure bile hadn’t expanded. Answer was they’ll make a decision after bloods on Wednesday. Shortly after Dr came back to say to give a certain medication but to speak to micro team.
Nurse came back to say they had none of this medication in hot clinic and would need to get some.
Then the other Dr came back to say that he can go on home, micro team say not to give antibiotics, come back Wednesday. So we sat 6 hours, my father's wound where the drain was in was never examined and nothing done for him.
We feel that there’s no system in place. One Dr tells you one thing then another tells you something different. We feel that a decision needs to be made by one Dr and stuck to and that the Doctor working in the Hot clinic needs to make the decision on that day as there’s too many opinions and not enough being done for the patient on the day. If a Dr makes a decision to see their patient in the hot clinic then they should be the one to see them, not a different Doctor every time you're in.
We know the hospital is a very busy environment but we feel as a family that the system is just leaving patients frustrated.
