"Stroke disease diagnosis and treatment"

About: Royal Alexandra Hospital, Paisley - Geriatric/Stroke Team

(as a service user),

I just wanted to take a few moments to say a huge, huge thank you to Dr Farid for all the incredible, care, attention, and support when my husband and I met him in April. It is truly lifechanging to have someone listen and understand your symptoms and be your NHS advocate and warrior. I have literally lost count of the numerous doctors, GPs, nurses I have met over 27 years of migraines – but without the quick and conclusive diagnosis he was able to ascertain in such a short period of time.

It sounds strange to be “celebrating” diagnosis of stroke disease (small vessel ischemia) and to understand both the condition and damage to date. The clear, calm, gentle and concise explanation for such a complex condition was easy to digest and understand. Especially under the tense conditions and with my bipolar thinking methodology. From the explanation and the scans we were shown, I immediately understood how serious this condition is, how lucky I have been, and how fortunate I am to be able to have my full capacities. Knowing the symptoms and damage that can be caused by this “silent killer” has both informed and empowered me. It has literally changed my life (unrecognisably) in such a few, but vital weeks. I am learning to distinguish between the various symptoms I can identify from the complex mix of conditions I have. This has improved my self-confidence and ability to live a lively (but gentler) and full life. I now have hope and look forward to many healthier years – giving back to others, the way you have given hope and health back to me.

So again, I want to extend a huge hug, warmly and gratefully. To sincerely thank you - for literally saving my life and wellbeing and for giving me hope.

I look forward to learning how to manage this and my other conditions with his, the NHS, Stroke Association and self-management tools and techniques.

Eternally grateful and very, very lucky…
