"My future is looking a lot brighter"

About: CGL Birmingham / East Hub

(as a service user),

Hi, I'm an alcoholic in my 50s. Before engaging with CGL my life was a complete mess through excessive 7 days a week drinking. When I joined CGL I was given a support worker, her name is Michelle a wonderful woman who saw faith in me.

Michelle got me into Park House for an inpatient detox programme in March 2024 for a period of 2 weeks. I successfully completed my detox programme with help & support from all the staff at Park house & I came out from there feeling very hopeful for the future.

I started having acupuncture and attending NA/AA meetings held at CGL  which I find great, I also attend the Datus group, meeting again held at CGL with another great lady called Letisha which again is a great meeting which I'm learning a lot from.

My future is looking a lot brighter and I'm looking forward to going to Fircroft College in July to do a 3 day course on addiction and recovery. So I would like to say a massive thank you CGL for all there help and support, if it wasn't for them I don't think I would be alive now.

CGL have saved me and I can't thank them enough. I will continue my road to recovery attending meetings every week and maintain sobriety.

Dear jupiterqn78

Thank you for reaching out to us about your experiences.

It sounds like you were in a really troubling place with your alcohol use before you started to access our support. I am aware daily and excessive drinking can take a huge toll on somebody’s physical, mental and social wellbeing and it must have been a really tough time for you.

I’m so glad that you have had such a positive experience through Michelle’s support and all of the opportunities you have been given to engage in. It was great to read that you found your time at Park House helpful, and that you successfully completed a detox there. Anytime spent in residential support can be a real challenge, but with the right attitude and commitment it can really kick-start somebody’s recovery and it was amazing to hear you left there in such a good place. I hope you feel extremely proud of what you achieved there during those two weeks.

It sounds like you have really thrown yourself into all of the options and choices that can be beneficial to somebody’s recovery. Mutual aid groups where you can learn from others and make new and positive connections is so crucial. I am so glad you have benefitted from the different meetings and groups you have attended, and I hope the connections you have made with others are helpful to you for many years to come.

I would like to wish you all the very best for the time you will be spending at Fircroft College and I hope that you achieve everything you want to during this time. I am sure that if you show the same levels of commitment to your studies, as you have to your recovery, you will achieve all you want to and more.

I will make sure all of the support networks, including Michelle are informed of your feedback and I am sure they will be incredibly thankful for what you have shared as well as really happy to hear how well you are feeling and progressing in your recovery.

Thanks once again for reaching out to us, and I wish you all the very best.

Take care,

Lydia
