"Everyone is a winner with this service"

About: Older People’s Services / Hospital at Home Northern Sector

(as a service user),

I am a carer in my 70s for my husband (80s) with Parkinson’s. I developed sepsis and was taken to Altnagelvin hospital where they took great care of me. My husband was at home with very limited mobility and the doctors made me aware of the Hospital at Home service and how it worked.

I was referred to them as I required another seven days of treatment. The at Home team were wonderful, I had visits three times a day with one to one treatment. The team were so efficient, thoughtful, friendly and caring it made me feel I was getting top-grade hospital treatment in the comfort of my own home. Even the pharmacy service phoned to check on me and explain the tablet regime.

Hospital at Home is an exceptional service and delivers superb care. This community based service should be expanded as a fantastic example of delivering top quality care in an efficient way for both patients and the health service. I was able to recover in the familiar surroundings of home without taking up valuable hospital bed space and I feel everyone is a winner with this service.

Thanks for your feedback.

Firstly I would like to apologize for the late response.

Treatment at home is our aim at all times and It was great that we were able to take you out of hospital to finish your treatment.

We work extremely well as a MDT and our pharmacist plays a vital role in the care of our patients.

I understand that being the main carer for a loved one with a medical conditions that limits theirs their day to day life can put a lot of pressure on the carer if you are admitted to hospital.

To hear the team delivered care in a kind professional manner makes me so proud to be part of it. As a team member I had visited you on a few occasions and I am sure I can speak for the rest of the team on how you and your husband welcomed us into your home during your illness.

I would like to add that your are an amazing person and it was very clear even during your own illness that you had your husband at the centre of your mind. I wish you and your husband good health in the future.

King regards

Katherine Stevenson
