"My hospital stay at causeway"

About: Causeway Hospital / Medical 1

(as a service user),

I was a recent patient at Causeway Medical Ward 1 approximately just over a week ago. Most of the staff were excellent. Two Nurses in particular stood out, for their professionalism, their caring attitude towards patients and ability to calm the most anxious of patients on the ward. They are two exceptional nurses.

Unfortunately I had a terrible experience with another nurse. I do not know their name. From the outset I felt like they were treating me in a way that was very unacceptable. I believe this was because I was a smoker. Having studied ' communication' at some length I am acutely aware of how not only myself but others are being treated. This Nurse had no issue using poor communication which made me feel victimised, marginalised, a waste of resources. It was h*rrendous the way I made me feel. They did not miss one opportunity.. It got to the point where I could no longer take it and I had made the decision to 'sign myself out'. Although I knew this was not a good idea. I suffer from anxiety and if it had not been for one of the exceptional nurses I mentioned ealier I would have signed myself out. This Nurse spoke with me, calmed me down and I changed my mind and decided to stay. I have never complained about any causeway staff but I'm making this complaint 10% for myself and 90% for other v*lnerable ill patients in the future. I found myself smoking more because of how I was treated,

Hi Debsmac,

my name is Nicky Butcher, and I am assistant clinical services manager at Causeway Hospital, which covers Medical1.

I am really sorry firstly to hear that you have been unwell, and found yourself being in the position of being in hospital.

It can be a frightening experience.

I am delighted to hear your good experience of the two staff nurses who helped to put you at ease, and reassure you. This is what I expect.

Communication is a huge important part of any staff nurses role, and we put a huge emphasis on it.

It is certainly not our place to pass judgement on any individuals choices, but are there to offer support, or advice if required.

I welcome all feedback, both positive, and negative, and will utilise yours to share with my team, to improve.

One of the Trusts core values is compassion, and I expect all my staff to show this to all service users and families that they come into contact with.

Do not hesitate to contact me further by email, or by telephone if you wish to discuss further.

I am contactable via switchboard Causeway Hospital.

Kind regards,

Nicky.
