End of august 2023 I was ambulanced in & had a few days in Wynard Ward. I was frightened & alone as I assumed since being in a wheelchair made me immune to sudden curve balls! I have a neurological disorder that comes with a variety of symptoms & it’s exhausting explaining them as most doctors/health care providers don’t know or have the time to understand fully what’s going on.
Throughout my experience at Wynard and my subsequent treatment after I felt seen, understood and cared for regardless of how ‘complicated’ my physical symptoms can be, which includes my strong mental health triggers. I was terrified at the start and as I experienced their kindness & understanding I know it stopped me going into a dark spiral of giving up!
Their patience soothed my scared/trauma state which enabled me to have certain procedures done with minimal impact to my neurological symptoms eg seizures, body shut down etc. This lead ultimately being able to build strength & confidence within myself to show up for my operation with courage & a mindset of ‘I’ve got this’ ‘I am in good hands’.
I felt safe & heard which brought me back ‘online’ for when I felt poorly & gave me the best chance of healing within me & for future appointments/procedures.
They said a lot of times when I said my thankyous ‘it’s our job’! Yes but people can still be doing their job and be impatient, uncaring, dismissive etc. They were the opposite & I can’t thank them enough.
To maintain their attentiveness over an 8 month period & me seeing them regularly shows that it is who they are - kindhearted, patient, attentive, knowledgeable and incredibly special individuals - all this whilst doing a stressful busy job.
I am so so grateful & wish them all the blessings in the world as they sure were all a blessing in mine.
‘They’ are: Michelle, Becky, Jackie & my surgeon/consultant Dr Knight. (You have my permission to share my story with them as I thinks it’s so important to let people know these chinks of light’. Thanks
"Pure kindness, understanding & care"
