"So glad I did the right thing"

About: CGL Birmingham

(as a service user),

In a tunnel where there was no light at the end. The funny thing is I didn’t even look for it. 20 plus years of abusing my body, mind and those of my loved ones.

Both of my parents were addicts. My younger brother was an addict. They are all dead now. I had to change the narrative. Fear stopped me from changing it for so long. But I’d had enough and needed to do the right thing and I’m so glad I did. This meant more for me than most as I look at my addiction as a generational curse, a curse which has now been broken

Dear Dannyb82

Thank you for getting in touch with us to share your experiences.

I’m Lydia and I’m responsible for listening and responding to people’s stories and I apologise that my response is coming through a little late.

All too often, addiction costs people their lives and I was really sorry to read about the loss of your parents and your younger brother. I can’t even begin to imagine how hard it must have been for you to lose such close family members, especially whilst battling your own addiction.

It sounds like during those 20 years plus, you were so immersed in the daily reality of addiction, that there was little, if any room for contemplation that things could one day be different.

I was so glad to read that you managed to overcome your fears about change, and have since broken the cycle of intergenerational addiction. I am aware that this must have taken a huge amount of personal commitment and hard work.

I hope you feel extremely proud of everything you have achieved and that as you continue into your recovery, you build a life that is full of peace and the light of opportunity.

Thank you once again for reaching out to us, and I wish you all the very best in life.

Take care,

Lydia
