"Being asked to share a room"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Combined Assessment Unit Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / General Medicine

(as the patient),

While in medical assessment ward and I was asked to share a room. I politely declined and explained the health reasons why I didn’t want to share. I then felt emotionally blackmailed by staff, with them saying a number of things including, how would I feel if it was my relative stuck in a corridor, that they had an elderly person stuck on a trolley without a room.

Once again I apologised and said I couldn’t share. The nurse seemed to be angry about this and stormed out of the room without responding to me.

I was asked to share again on B3 but received the opposite reaction. The nurse understood and didn’t push me.

Dear Bumblebee2

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am sorry to learn that you recently found yourself in hospital. I am sure that you understand the reason that our team members have to ask our patients if they are willing to share a room, however I am sorry to hear that you were made to feel uncomfortable following your response.

Our teams are under immense pressure and are extremely busy, however it is not acceptable to make patients feel bad or that they are being emotionally blackmailed. I am sorry that you had this experience, however I am sure that the staff member did not intend to make you feel this way.

I am glad to learn that your experience was different when you moved to Ward B3.

I will share your feedback with the relevant teams to make them aware of your experience, should you wish to discuss this further, please contact the Patient Experience Team at dg.patientservices@nhs.scot

I hope that you are now feeling better

kind regards

Alexis

Update posted by Bumblebee2 (the patient)

I did respond to patient services by email two weeks ago, but haven’t received a reply.

Mistakes continue to be made with my care and I am appalled at the different stories I am hearing.
