"My son's lacerated finger!"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a parent/guardian),

Very recently my son severely lacerated his finger in an accident. He was advised that the tendon was severed, discharged with a temporary dressing, and told that he would be received a follow up call for surgical repair.

It is now 108 hours, exceeding the recommended 72 hours and no follow up has been received.

I have called the A&E a number of times, to be told someone will call me back, they haven't. It would appear that no referral to orthopaedics has been made.

The NHS guidance for these injuries is that they are repaired as soon as possible to avoid loss of function in the hand.

The NHS guidance states that tendon repair isn’t usually regarded as emergency surgery. But, it’s generally carried out as quickly as possible after the injury – usually within a few days. This is because the longer the tendons remain ruptured, the more scarring will develop on the end of the tendons. This could reduce the range of your hand movement after surgery.

I don't know where else to turn, except to go and camp out in A&E to try and speak to the Senior Charge Nurse.
