"Worried about discharge arrangements"

About: Royal Edinburgh Hospital / Regional Mental Health Services

(as a relative),

I am concerned that my father in his late 80ies has been asked by a member of staff, if he is willing to care for a patient, who has a tribunal coming up soon, on the first few days of her release from Royal Ed. The patient been in there for at least 5 or 6 weeks.

From what he has told me there were no questions asked about his circumstances or capacity, just assumptions that because he appears competent and younger than his years he could take care of an extremely vulnerable adult.

I don't consider him vulnerable as he is fully independent and leads an active life. However, he is vulnerable because he is kind, feels sorry for the patient, and is not aware of the potential to be dumped on by discharge teams, mental health and social work staff. He has no idea what may be involved in looking after a vulnerable adult. He has no idea how vulnerable someone who has been sectioned might be.

It is very concerning that he has even been asked and more concerning that he has been asked without asking any background questions about himself.

He will make his own decision on this but I have no trust that this decision will be supported by the professionals who have a responsibility for her release and indirectly for his wellbeing. I believe he will be influenced by unfair pressure, lack of information about what he is taking on and therefore could end up 'taken a loan of'.

I am pretty angry about the ask but mostly worried that this might be put upon him.
