I was admitted to Daisy Hill hospital in a confused state with serious cellulitis infection. Spent three weeks in a high dependency bed almost immobile. Received mixed care from Consultants, doctors and nurses.
I managed to get moved to the stroke and rehab wards on level 4. Obtained excellent care from the whole team. Cleaners who never ceased to clean and polish floors and any solid surface that didnt move. wide range of nurses, student nurses, care and community nurses, volunteer nurses, night time nurses, many from overseas as well as local girls, men and women. I engaged with OT staff and Physio professionals, all of whom encouraged me to improve my mobility.
I was able to go from only 1 step to walking out to the toilets, up to the specialised gym and along the corridor. Quite an achievement in three weeks. There were a number of individuals who pushed me hard along the path to improvement but i cannot mention names as the list is too long. As Dr Gormely said most of the rehab work must be done by the patient. I did it. Bed and chair exercises till my muscles were aching. My confidence in my own ability to walk in the zimmer. I cannot speak highly enough in the praise of all the people I encountered, I sang for Tom from Silverbridge and Joanne from the gym. One of my torturers Cathy was brilliant.
The food was very good if you got what you ordered. Sometimes orders went astray. Not surprising given the turnover of patients. All in all , I went into Daisy hill a very sick man and came out well improved and determined to change my lifestyle. Thanks to you all. Big J.
