"Public holiday discharging"

About: General Surgery / General Surgery (Ward 7 & 8) General Surgery / Upper GI, Oesophageal and Hepatobiliary Surgery (Ward 11)

(as the patient),

I must say that the treatment from staff has been magnificent. It is a privilege to be treated by some of the most knowledgeable, kind professionals that any organisation employs, and although I have made a previous opinion on a member of staff, I'll have to repeat their caring (sic) attitude.

I was admitted to hospital with severe pain in my oesophagus and treated with drugs that the pain team have stated I need. However, I was told I was to be discharged without any of these necessary drugs to control my pain that I need. I had overdosed on them at home because of the extreme pain that I could not control, and had little, or none, of them left. Thus, I needed a supply to cover until I could get a prescription after the public holiday had ended.

The surgeon on duty said I could not get them (this later shown to be totally wrong) and I was to go home and suffer extreme pain for three days until I could get a prescription.

I was advised by other staff to go home, dial 111 and get readmitted, which is correct procedure but I feel is such a waste of NHS resources.

I have no ill will or personal views on the surgeon who this relates to but if I am admitted again in the future to ward 7 or 11, I am sure they will be so petty and uncaring that they seem to be!

Thank you again for the great service I have received by every other member of staff in ward 7 and 11.

PS Since I can't get these drugs from the NHS direct I am lucky a friend of mine is on similar medication to me, and can supply me with them until my doctor reopens. I know this is totally wrong, but so is the treatment I received by the surgeon!

Dear Mostly happy 02

Thank you for your opening words of encouragement for the staff who cared for you on your recent admission. It was also encouraging to hear them once again, when we spoke recently. Details of your experience have been shared and we hope you are making a good recovery at home.

Please also seek advice from your GP to ensure you are correctly supported while at home.

With grateful thanks and wishing you well.
