"Felt like I was dismissed"

About: New Victoria Hospital / Minor injuries unit

(as a parent/guardian),

I recently attended minor injuries with my son who had injured his ankle. The waiting room was empty, the lovely receptionist had stated that they close in 1 hour 15 mins but I could either be given an appointment to return tomorrow which I stated I could not due to working myself.

I was mid speaking to the receptionist to say that I did not mind waiting to see if I could wait to be seen before having to attend the kids A&E, to be interrupted by a member of staff saying I would need to just go straight there as they close in 1 hour 15minutes.

I feel I should have been given the opportunity to wait to see if they did have time to see my son after dealing with other patients in the department instead of being dismissed. As I work within the healthcare profession, I know not to attend these departments near to closing time but did feel the time I attended was sufficient.

When I attended A&E department once my son was triaged, we were seen had an x-ray and treatment in a total of thirty minutes.

I think the times should be changed or information not to attend this department by a certain time. I was willing to wait to be seen but to be dismissed like that I found this rude as the department was still open for a further 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Dearsmcxx,

Thank you for taking time to submit a care opinion. I am sorry about the poor communication you experienced at the New Victoria minor injury unit, this is not the high quality of care we strive to deliver every day. Please accept my apologies, I have shared your story with the Staff at the MIU to ensure communication improvements are made, and future patients will have a more positive experience when attending.

I am delighted that your experience at the Emergency Department was a better one, and your son was seen and discharged promptly, I hope he is continuing to make good progress at home.

with kind regards,

Karen
