"Would have really liked some more information beforehand"

My day of surgery experience at the Day Surgery Unit at the New Victoria was fantastic, I couldn't fault it. All staff involved in the process (diagnostic laparoscopy for endometriosis) were very empathetic and patient. I was made to feel comfortable and safe throughout the process. The nurses in particular were brilliant, making the experience as smooth as it could have been, even taking me down in a wheelchair to the taxi when I was leaving. I'm astounded at the high level of care I was given. 

However the pre-operative care was not a good experience. I had a phone call with a very well meaning nurse who asked me some basic screening questions, and who told me that I would have time for queries/ concerns at my in person pre-operative assessment. When I got to the appointment in person at Stobhill, I had my bloods taken and other checks done, but was not allowed to ask any questions of the nurse. At this stage, I was going in for a surgery for which I had not had any in-depth conversation with a medical professional. I didn't know what the plan was for the surgery itself (diagnosis or removal, or both?) I didn't have an opportunity to ask about the risks, after care, or what to expect in terms of recovery time. I didn't know how long I was going to be off work, or what to tell my manager. 

On the morning of surgery the gynaecologist asked me if I would like a coil fitted while I was under anaesthetic, and I had about 15 minutes to make that decision, which is a significant one. 

Whilst the day of surgery care was fantastic, I didn't feel well prepared at all on arriving in the unit on the day, and would have really liked some more information beforehand about what was going to happen.
