"Excellent maternity care"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Community Maternity Care University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

Over Easter weekend, I phoned maternity triage early in the morning as I was worried about my baby's movements. I was also experiencing contractions (which I wasn't sure about at the time). I was advised to head to the department and was seen straight away. It turned out I had pre-eclampsia and as I was in the early stages of labour, I was to be admitted.

Labour progressed and I was moved from the antenatal ward (where I enjoyed a lovely relaxing bath run by Colette, one of the midwives, who had actually delivered my first baby!) to the Labour ward. I had never gone into labour myself before (previously induced) so this experience was quite different.

The midwife Geraldine was so lovely and reassuring, especially when I was rushed to theatre for an emergency caesarean, as my baby's heart rate kept dropping drastically. I was terrified as I'd never had a general anaesthetic before, but all the staff were so efficient and caring that I felt like I was in safe hands. I received excellent care from all staff in the post natal ward, while I recovered and was given a blood transfusion. I was finally discharged home with my baby girl and we also had great support from the community midwife team based at Lanark/Lesmahagow.

I would like all of the staff to know that they have this very positive feedback as they all work very hard, despite (in my opinion) being understaffed and underpaid. The births of my three daughters at Wishaw and the midwives and doctors who were involved will always be remembered. Also the birth of my son who we lost in 2022, although a devastating  experience, will be remembered forever thanks to the amazing staff and the care and compassion they provided.

Our family is now complete and I am so grateful to all the staff from the maternity unit at Wishaw and all the community staff. Heroes, every one of them.

Dear Cbear2024,

Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your baby.

I am so pleased to hear of the wonderful experience you have had despite it being quite a worrying time due to having pre-eclampsia and needing an emergency c-section. I am so glad that our staff were able to support you and care for you throughout and make you feel relaxed. I am also glad that your post partum care from the community midwives in Lanark/Lesmahagow has been excellent as well.

I look forward to passing on your kind words to the whole team who I am sure will be delighted to hear your feedback and get a real boost from it.

I wish you and your family all the best and hope you are settling well into family life.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
