"My heart and transplanted kidney"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Cardiac rehab Belfast City Hospital / Cardiology Belfast City Hospital / Intensive Care Unit Royal Victoria Hospital / Cardiac surgery

(as a service user),

I had aortic stenosis for over 9 years and it got that bad that in April 2023 I was informed that I needed an operation to replace the aortic valve.

In preparing me for surgery I had to have stent inserted between kidney and bladder as I had a blockage, this started a catalogue of hospital stays over the summer of 2023.

I finally got a date for aortic valve replacement but caught covid next day. I got a new date early in January 2024.

After the operation, I needed to be in ICU for over 3 weeks before being transferred to ward 5A in The Royal. I must say the treatment I received in both City and Royal hospitals was first class.

On my release I was put into the care of 2 fantastic ladies of the cardiac rehabilitation unit of Whiteabbey hospital.

Each session has been put across in professional way but in friendly manner and have always been open to questions. Thank you NHS.
