"Elderly female in mixed sex ward"

First of all I would like to say how wonderful the staff in Ward 5B Crosshouse Hospital are - this is not a reflection on them . The staff are going far and beyond to make the best of a bad situation.

My elderly relative was a patient in 5B in a mixed room. She went to the toilet and a male patient walked in. Can you imagine how an old woman felt about that.. scared to go to the toilet again and scared to go to sleep.

There was a man using abusive swear words whilst talking on the phone and she was  afraid he would also be abusive to her. She had no rest. If you must have verbally abusive men and frail elderly women in one 6 bed room, then please think about the other patients.   

The other thing is that I understand there are sometimes 8 patients in a room for 6, that must be really difficult for staff and patients. Why aren't  some of the areas used as offices now turned back into patient areas. The management really need to rethink what they are doing at the moment. No wonder lots of staff are leaving when they have to work in these conditions. 

The staff look exhausted and the patients aren't able to rest properly. Is there guidance for staff to follow when men and women are in one room. How do managers know it is being used? Can managers say hand in heart that the correct guidance is followed?
