I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2018 when I was in my 70s, initially by my GP, then confirmed at Perth Royal Infirmary by Dr Habicht, Parkinson's specialist and Specialist Parkinson's Nurse Lorna. The initial diagnosis came as a surprise but on reflection explained some symptoms over the preceding few years.
Started taking medication, with some minor oddities of behaviour for a few days, which then settled down. Also notified DVLA and car insurers of my condition.
Since then I have had review meetings with Dr Habicht at PRI, and with Nurse Gillies at Crieff Community Hospital, including revising tablet dosage and referrals to other specialists - Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy, EMG botox clinic (to reduce excessive salivation).
I have also benefitted greatly from a six week group speech therapy course at PRI led by Sarah; from ongoing botox injections at Ninewells by Dr Gilbertson; and from weekly seated exercise classes at Crieff Community Hospital led by Kirsty of the Wellbeing team.
From all these specialists - without exception - I have consistently received excellent treatment and support.
No one wants to have Parkinson's. That said, the qualified, capable and caring treatment and back- up I have experienced makes understanding the condition clearer and helps find the will to fight back to the limit possible.
"Excellent treatment and support"
