"I felt powerless, alone, isolated, distrustful and angry"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Medical emergency assessment unit (MEAU)

(as the patient),

In my experience, MEAU B are operating a borderline dangerous ward. I was prescribed and administered medication without my knowledge or consent. Dignity and respect are values that were absent on this ward. Basic care and empathy for patients was missing. It was a horror show.

A nurse repeatedly misled me regarding a registrar coming to see me.  Denied any relief for my cough and throat despite bi-lateral pneumonia.  Never offered options that, several days later, I was informed about retrospectively.  Ie ice, hot drinks, cold drinks, simple linctus.  I was literally left to suffer for hours, despite repeated requests and complaints.

One doctor specifically was incredibly rude and abrupt, their opening line to me be being - what's your problem?  I don't know who they were, as they didn't bother with hellos, introductions, explanations or goodbyes.

As stated above, my treatment plan was not clearly discussed with me, and any changes from initial admission to leaving the ward were not communicated at all.  The final straw being asked to go on an IV of which I had no discussion about.  The administering nurse also had no idea why I was on it, just that I was.

I felt powerless, alone, isolated, distrustful and angry.  To the point I was packed and ready to go home and suffer there regardless.

I would refuse to be admitted to this ward in the future regardless of my state of health.

I would like to point out that I was subsequently moved to Witham Ward, which was outstanding in every way.  I would like to thank the team there for turning my experience around and taking care of me when I was very ill.

Dear running79

I can only apologise that the communication from our nursing and medical team did not meet the high standards that we expect from ourselves. We would expect our team to answer any queries and communicate changes to you, so you could provide informed consent, as well as being providing comfort advice that could assist you whilst feeling unwell. We have a dedicated nurse in charge of the unit daily who if you were struggling with communication or having concerns regarding treatment should have been escalated to, and we will remind staff to utilise this staff member in this way. Timely intervention and improved communication could have prevented ongoing distress for yourself, and we can only apologise that this did not whilst on our unit. If you would like for us to investigate your concerns and complaints further then I would be happy to look into them in more detail. You could contact our unit and request a call from the ward manager or if not happy to do so you could raise these concerns through PALS (Patient Advisory Liaison Service) pals@ULH.nhs.uk.

Regards

Kimberley
