My elderly father who has a number of medical issues (atrial fibrillation, aortic stenosis, mixed dementia, hearing loss and arthritis in hips and back), became unwell a number of weeks back with coughing, wheezing and oedema in his legs and torso. The GP offered to contact the Hospital At Home Team, who took my father on as a patient meaning he was seen by a Doctor and nurses at home where he was comfortable and less confused than if he’d been taken into hospital for inpatient care.
The nurses came out twice daily to take blood and administer medication to help with the oedema. He was under the care of the Hospital At Home Team for 6 days. The nurses especially were fantastic with my father, due to the nature of his conditions he is prone to periods of confusion, but they communicated with him fantastically, keeping him in good spirits, and treating him with such dignity and care.
What could have been a very traumatic time for my dad and subsequently the whole family, was made so much more bearable. Our whole family believe that this service is invaluable, especially for people like my dad where going into hospital is a traumatic, scary and draining experience.
"This service is invaluable"
