"A shining example of the very best of the NHS"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Have just had elective hip replacement surgery at Grantham and District hospital, Lincolnshire. After initial diagnosis in 2023 at Louth hospital, I attended a pre-assessment clinic at Grantham and District hospital in September. In March I was put on Mr Mahmoud's list for a total hip replacement procedure, and in due course admitted to Ward 1 Orthopaedic unit.

I arrived at the hospital and proceeded to complete the required pre-operative checks prior to receiving the anaesthesia and entering the operating theatre. The medical staff were all, without exception, attentive and focussed on the task in hand, instilling confidence and exhibiting competence. The surgeon and his team carried out the operation efficiently and with appropriate care and attention to the patient's wellbeing. At no point in the procedure did I feel vulnerable.

On returning to the ward the standard of nursing care continued to be excellent. The staff nurse, Juby, assigned to look after me, was conscientious  and carried out her duties carefully and with calm assurance. The nurses and doctors worked very effectively as a team to deliver a professional, patient-centred service.

Further to my experience was the input of the physiotherapists prior to discharge. I was introduced to a programme of rehabilitative physio exercises and shown useful techniques for facilitating my ongoing recovery.

Both day and night staff were able to provide a first class service in every aspect of patient care and over the two days inpatient stay I and my fellow patients agreed that this hospital is a shining example of the very best of the NHS. I feel certain that I represent the views and feelings of all those who receive treatment in this dedicated hospital unit.

Update posted by Manchester man (the patient)

Hi to all the team at Grantham hospital. I was pleased to read your generous comments in response to my recent experience in your brilliant facility. Since my surgery on April 19th and discharge the following day I have been making very steady progress towards a full recovery. Again I am most grateful to the quality of care I received in the operating theatre and from the nursing and physiotherapy staff on ward 1. Apart from the bruising and temporary inflammation on the operated leg, my pain is now well managed and perhaps more importantly my level of mobility is improving day on day. I can hardly believe it is only 10 days since the procedure and I am already feeling like a new, reconstructed man. At this rate of recovery I feel confident that I will be able to resume many of my leisure activities in the not too distant future. I remain positive and more confident in my recovering health with each day that passes. My long term ambition is to get back to playing again with my young grand children....hopefully football ( aka 'soccer' in the US where they live ) and the noble art of cricket. So please keep up the great work in Grantham and tell your patients from me that life after surgery is good....very good! Wishing you all the best. Manchester man Xx
