"My son's treatment"

About: General practices in Lanarkshire Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Plastic Surgery University Hospital Wishaw / Dermatology

(as a parent/guardian),

My teenage son has a lesion on the back of his left hand. He has been attending doctors for past 4 months, being treated for what was thought to be a wart.

He had a few treatments of cryotherapy and has very little improvement. He then was applying Salacctol paint, also with very little improvement. 7 months we were asked to go private as no one could help on the NHS.

We went to a private clinic  where the doctor said it wasn't a wart, it is Pyogenic Granuloma, we were given a quote, can't afford it.

Returned back to GP, who referred us to Wishaw Hospital. The consultant said they could not help as they don't specialise in hands, we would be referred to a plastic surgeon.

We attended Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where we were told as it wasn't a trauma, we would be put on a waiting list ,about 8 weeks.

We called the Queen Elizabeth department of plastic surgery as my son bumped it and pulled the head of it, resulting in severe bleeding  to see where we are on the waiting list.

We were told he has been removed from the waiting list and transferred to another list with no information passed to us.

Apparently it takes approximately 40 weeks. A normal surgical list I believe.  They said we need an urgent referral from our GP to advance him on the waiting list.

Called GP, to be told they had already written 3 urgent referrals and could not write another. This I don't understand. Can't go to A&E as it's surgical.

It's affecting his mental health he has cut it off several times before we are having to hide knives, refusing to go to school.

I need help and advice I'm at my wits end.

Dear Gary582,

I am sorry to hear about the negative impact this lesion is having on your son's mental health. It must be very difficult as a parent to be going through such a worrying time. I am sorry to hear the back and forth you have had between your GP and various specialists.

I don't want to cause any confusion by asking you to contact anyone else as I believe NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde are best placed to discuss this further and resolve your issue for you. I would only advise that if you wish to provide feedback or raise a complaint about your GP (which it doesn't sound like you do from reading your story) then could you contact the practice manager as GP practices are responsible for responding to any concerns raised about their practice but are not set up as responders on Care Opinion.

I hope your son gets some help soon with this.

Kind Regards,

Jenni
