"They just wanted to turn us away"

About: Royal Cornwall Hospital (Treliske) / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Nurse seemed to have their mind set on turning us away to Pharmacist. We went to A&E as a last resort as Drs appointment wasn't until a month later and despite sending photos and contacting multiple times they wouldn't bring the appointment forwards.

Despite telling the nurse in A&E that my son hadn't slept for 8-10 weeks itching and that it had spread to me, they just wanted to turn us away. He has about 50 weeping infected sores on each hand, let alone the all body rash and excoriations. No wonder scabies is rife in the community when people take no interest and just want to push you to the next person.

I said to the nurse that he was going out to cafes and seeing young nieces and nephews but they didn't care. I think having ow googled scabies, given the history of up all night itching and spread to myself, being a professional nurse with experience I hope they will be told this and know for next time to recommend buying an over the counter cream for scabies.

The pharmacist the nurse directed us to also didn't diagnose it so it would have gone on even longer. It took a private GP appointment to get a diagnosis and I hope the red blotches on his hand don't scar. He still would be waiting for the GP appointment and spreading it everywhere had we not been able to go for the private appointment.

Dear Louha,

Thank you for taking the time to get in touch. I was both shocked and saddened to read about your experience where you were turned away by our Emergency Department and that you have had such trouble getting a GP appointment. This must have been very distressing for both you and your son, who already hadn't slept for 8-10 weeks by the time you visited us.

If you would like to raise your concerns further, you can contact our Complaints team using the details below:

Tel: 01872 252793

Email: rcht.patientexperience@nhs.net

I have already shared your story with them so that they are aware. I will also make sure that your feedback reaches the Emergency Department so that they can reflect on your experience and make improvements where possible.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience with us, I am sorry that on this occasion it wasn't a positive one. I hope that now your son has been seen by a private GP his condition will be getting better.

Best wishes,

Jess
