"Gynaecology experience"

About: Ipswich Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I was referred to Gynaecology after a suspect ultrasound which showed possible cysts/growth. I was told this was on my left ovary. I was not given any further information. I attended the clinic (which incidentally no one ever knows where it is, it moves between floors and appointment letters are usually wrong) and was given an admission bracelet- which worried me a little. Then I went in to the appointment, assuming I was having an internal ultrasound and possible colposcopy. I didn’t know what the latter entailed, and no one explained. Having had four children, I was fairly laid back about the visit and did relate that I had had a uterine resection years before due to persistent very heavy bleeding after having my twins. Again, no discussion.

What followed felt like butchery- I didn’t realise the doctor was trying to open my sealed uterus (after the resection it sealed closed as is apparently quite common) and the pain was indescribable. I had gas and air, but the panic as I had no idea what was happening was worse than the pain. The doctor stopped and said they would need to refer me for an MRI or surgery to check inside my uterus as they couldn’t gain access. I was given a pad and told I could go. I was pretty dazed and confused and left the hospital, not realising I was bleeding heavily. By the time I got to the car my jeans were soaked through between my legs and there was blood on my car seat once I returned home after a 5 min journey. Worse I felt violated and upset.

This was in 2022 and I haven’t told anyone since, but I felt I had to share my story, hopefully it might improve things for others. Nothing on earth would make me go back to that department.
