"Commendation for the Team in Ambulance Cy4819…"

About: West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust

At 4:30am on the 5th of March 2024, I woke up with pain in my chest and breathing difficulty. I recently had pleural effusion which I had been given medication for, so I believed it was sorted. Quite worried, I called 999 immediately and ambulance Cy4819 arrived at my home before 5am. The ambulance service team were so professional, cheerful and very empathetic. They checked my vitals which were fine, but when they listened to my lungs, they had some concerns and advised I let them take me to the hospital. I was very reluctant about going to a&e again, due to a recent experience that was so physically and emotionally draining for me, but I agreed eventually.

The ride to the hospital was pleasant, as they person who sat next to me in the ambulance kept talking to me and this distracted me from the discomfort and anxiety I was feeling.

When we got to a&e, they got me to sit in an isolated area and had me registered. I felt really cared for and was so grateful. Didn't get the chance to really thank them before they left.

I am happy they insisted that I need to go to the hospital, as it was detected that I still had fluid in my lungs and also an infection... which led to a difficult battle as an inpatient in hospital for a couple of weeks.

I am out of hospital now and have had good time to recover. So, to the team in Cy4819 working in the early hours of the 5th of March, I just want to say a big Thank You!
