After years of coping with throat and neck problems with which I have almost constantly had the feeling of being choked, my airway closing off, breathlessness, fatigue, difficulty speaking and hoarseness, I have finally been told that I probably have Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction.
I had a consultation with Sally, Senior Specialist Speech and Language Therapist at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. Sally put me at ease almost straight away, she was very patient and listened to my concerns, allowing me time to properly explain without being rushed. Very soon into the consultation she informed me she thought she knew what the problem was and guided me through a series of questions to confirm this. She also recognised that there may be other health issues going on which she quickly informed my GP of and also referred me to another department.
She talked me through breathing exercises and emailed me video links and websites for more information on this disease and the proper use of inhalers and spacers. She explained that Ninewells Hospital does not have the diagnostic equipment required to properly diagnose and treat this but, with her help and the online information, she can help me to reverse the symptoms.
I am so very grateful to Sally for her patience, understanding, reassurance and knowledge and feel a huge weight has been lifted from me just knowing someone understands how difficult it has been.
Thank you Sally. You're a star!
