"I’ve never been so unhappy and really anxious in my life"

About: Trauma & Orthopaedics / Ward 4C

(as the patient),

I’m in my 60s and I was admitted to the RVH in Belfast for two broken wrists and fractured humerus to my right arm.

I was initially put into burns unit in wee room with 2 other patients. I then went to theatre, had my surgery for humerus and right wrist.

After my surgery I was in 4C and ended on the corridor with screening around me. They moved me out a bay to accommodate another patient. It was horrendous as I’ve a stoma and asked a nurse to take me to the toilet, but they were so annoyed they said to another nurse - she’s not my patient!

The nurse who was in bay did take me but I never felt so uncomfortable and in the way in my life. I was on the border as they called it. Not one nurse came near me and when I shouted it was like hold on a minute but they never came back.

I rang my son to come up I was distraught by morning. I’ve never been so unhappy and really anxious in my life. I just wanted to highlight the situation I was in as a patient

Dear Sara817

I want to thank you for taking the time to share this story with us. I can imagine that this was not an easy time for you to reflect on and talk about and for that reason I want to say how much I appreciate you sharing this with us.

I hear your concern and I want to highlight that I will be taking this forward. We regularly have patient experience audits and I will be compiling these for reflection in light of your comment, as I do not feel that this is something that any patient should accept and as a manager I want to ensure that where there are issues we work on them comprehensively.

I’m so sorry to hear that your personal care was not delivered appropriately and I will be reviewing the team and also how we respond to those very basic needs more effectively. It is saddening to think of our patients not being attended to when they are in need.

I want to finish off by saying that I am sorry that you felt Anxious and distressed, please do be assured that our drive is put the patient at the centre of all we do, however, I do hear that on this occasion, you have felt let down.

I hope that this response does give you some comfort and reassurance, however, I am really keen to learn from this experience and I would like to invite you to contact me directly by email at joanna.hogg@belfasttrust.hscni.net so that we can discuss this further. I completely understand if you don’t wish to do so and I want to assure you of my gratitude to you in taking the time to help us to learn and improve and my commitment to listen.

My very best wishes to you in your recovery.
