"Continued lack of 18-week target"

About: Lincoln County Hospital / Respiratory medicine Lincoln County Hospital / X-ray and Scans

(as a service user),

I was referred by my GP in March 2023 for a chest x-ray to Lincoln County hospital. At the time I had a severe virus but showed similar symptoms to that of my mother who died from cancer in 2021. My GP sent the referral through as standard, which I was happy with as I didn’t believe I had cancer. However, I was being diagnosed with Long Covid and the team needed this x-ray to rule anything else out.

I never got an appointment!!! I chased once and told I would get one but here I am over a year later still without an appointment. So thankfully I don’t have cancer!!

You can forget the x-ray now because there is no point doing it. But I have to show people how appalling I feel ULHT as a trust is. There are good people working in the trust, but as a patient my experiences have been shocking.

I accessed Rheumatology and they did nothing whatsoever to help me except do x-rays to say I have osteoarthritis. Yet now I am struggling to do my job and I am only in my 40s. I was dismissed by the doctor.

I want others to see how bad I feel this Trust is in general. There are good people, certainly healthcare workers who are the backbone yet can be treated dreadfully and only get paid pittance. I want the trust to listen to these stories because I believe it is killing people and is dismissive of those who are more vulnerable in society. I do now request to be referred to out-of-area services where possible because to not even get a chest x-ray over a year later is not acceptable.

Dear Lets Make A Difference

I am so sorry to hear that your experience with us has not been satisfactory and that you have felt let down by the service. I can only respond from the Radiology perspective, as I am Diagnostic Matron, and I apologise that for some reason the appointment process has resulted in you not being able to have your requested Xray completed. I am not sure why this has been the case, as the Trust has worked hard to increase Radiology services, so that people can have access to the diagnostics promptly. However I would like to invite you to contact me directly, to understand this further.

Thank you

Catherine Hollingsworth, Matron

Thankyou for your response but there is nothing further I can add because I just didn’t get any appointment even though confirmed last year you had received it. So for some reason at your end no appointment was ever sent out and being over a year now it wouldn’t be right to have this appointment because I do not need it. All I want is for this to not happen to someone else as there was a chance I could have had cancer albeit small, but nevertheless if there was then things could be looking quite different. Thankfully I am a health professional and know myself well but someone else might not have been in that position.

Dear Lets Make a Difference

Thank you for your response to my post. I would have liked to be able to 'unpick' why we had not been able to appoint your Xray, to learn lessons and prevent other patients experiencing the same issues, and I can only do that with specific patient details to look up. However thank you for raising your experience to us at this time.

Kind regards

Cathy, Matron
