"No female GP at my surgery"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Accident & Emergency Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary / Urology General practices in Dumfries and Galloway

(as a service user),

I would like to start by thanking my GP surgery the DGRI and the Bladder and Bowel department. I have met some wonderful professional who have been amazing with me. I have felt very cared for and have had very thorough investigations and treatment which I am so grateful for.

I would however like to suggest for there to be more training around self harm for the emergency department. I have had two very unpleasant experiences.

What I wanted to bring up here which I am struggling with is that there is no female GP at my surgery. This is very difficult for me and puts me in a difficult situation. I have not disclosed symptoms due to this reason. Unfortunately the GP surgery is the only one within walking distance and It is very important to me that I can do that. I am in a position where I don't know what pathway to take. There is nurse practitioner, however this is not the same and I have had symptoms dismissed so the relationship for me is difficult. Thank you if you have read this far

Dear Albertie,

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback with us following your experiences with your GP surgery, Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, and our Bladder and Bowel department. I was pleased to read that you had a positive care experience and felt cared for throughout. I will ensure to share this feedback with the staff concerned as I know they will appreciate your kind words.

I note your suggestion for more training around self-harm following two unpleasant experiences within our Emergency Department. I was sorry to read that you had these unpleasant experiences and I will share your feedback with our management team for the Emergency Department.

With the point you raised regarding the lack of a female GP at your GP practice, it's important to share that GPs practices are independent contractors and therefore responsible for managing concerns about their own service. You may therefore find it helpful to discuss your concerns with the Practice Manager for the surgery. In more general terms, I can advise that contractually there is not a need for GP practices to have clinicians of a specified sex available, however, chaperones are available in every surgery and can be requested ahead of the consultation if required.

I hope that my response helps and offers some support to the feedback you have kindly provided. If you would like to explore any of my feedback further, please contact us at dg.patientservices@nhs.scot or by telephone at 01387 272733.

Kind regards

Jamie
