"Use of Makaton"

About: Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick children / Out patients

(as a parent/guardian),

Hi had a recent appt for my child at the Royal Belfast Children’s outpatients. We are there regularly as my son is under a few different specialties. I was so excited to see the Makaton symbols used here.

My son’s main form of communication is Makaton and it made me feel like we as a family were very included. His respiratory doctor also used a few signs with him and we loved it.

It would be lovely to see more of this used. Thank you to the staff at the Royal!

Hello, my name is Sinead Duffin and I am the Service Manager in RBHSC. Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback on the Makaton system in the Outpatient Department. I am really pleased that this method of communication was available to your son, I will certainly look at how this system can be used more widely throughout the Hospital. I will share your comments with the respiratory team to let them know how the use of a few signs at the Clinic resulted in an overall better experience for your son.
