"Diagnosis and Treatment (or lack thereof)"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

I am a 24 year old male and I was admitted via the Urgent Care Centre with gradually worsening excrutiating, debilitating pain on my left side Abdomen. I was very promptly given pain relief, first by the UCC then by the friendly and caring nursing staff (with whom I have no issues as they did seem to be focussed on my welfare). I have then spent a week here in pain whilst on High dose pain relief (such is the severity of my pain) having X-Rays, CTs, Ultrasounds and Sigmoidoscopies looking for abdomen/bowel problems. When these tests came back clear the Consultant (who only showed his once a day if I was lucky for 2 minutes max and never discussed anything with me) decided that meant I should go home despite my condition continuing to get worse! I spoke to another Registrar later who did another assessment and determined that my pain may be Orthopaedic and promptly started the ball rolling on getting an inpatient referal to Orthopaedics as I will be unable to look after myself at home. Imagine my surprise when the consultant has now over-ruled his decision and insisted I be discharged to arrange my own Orthopaedic treatment, again despite my condition continuing to get worse, me being bedbound due to extreme fatigue brought on by the pain and again being unable to look after myself on discharge but when I make these points he doesnt care "you'll figure something out". So in all I've been here 9 days now and will be sent home without so much as a diagnosis for my debiltating, excrutiating pain so I shall be walking straight to Orthopaedics to speak to them once I have been given my prescription of painkillers to take home. This attitude doesnt just apply to me - he has also just cancelled the treatment and discharged another patient on the ward who was 2 days into a 5 day treatment and told him to "see how you get on" despite this patient (an elderly gentleman) having very little home support and neither of us have been given any information on what happens next. Or another patient with excrutiating stomach pain for whom he withdrew all pain relief except paracetamol (where this patient had required Paracetamol, tramadol and morpheine to control his pain) leaving him in extreme agony until another Dr was asked to intervene and re-prescribe the Tramadol and then later discharged him with no diagnosis. Frankly appaling service from a so-called Consultant who only seems to be interested in emptying every bed in his ward regardless of patient condition.
