"Compassionate faces, skilled hands and unwavering support"

About: General practices in Tayside Haematology / Day Unit Patient Area Oncology / Ward 32 Oncology Clinics (outpatients) Oral Surgery & Medicine / Oral & Maxillofacial Clinic Xrays and scans / MRI Scans

(as the patient),

I wish to express my profound gratitude for the remarkable care and treatment I received during my recent treatment for neck cancer at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee. While I am not qualified to comment on clinical excellence, I feel compelled to share my observations of the extraordinary dedication and compassion exhibited by every single member of the medical team including the ward ancillary staff.

First and foremost, I want to acknowledge my GP. His prompt action, after I discovered a small lump on the left side of my neck, set the wheels in motion for my journey toward recovery. My GP organised an ultrasound and promptly informed my haematologist, Dr. Gowans, at Ninewells Hospital. Dr. Gowans, too, deserves my heartfelt appreciation for his vigilance and commitment to my well-being. His late-evening call, requesting updates on the ultrasound date, demonstrated his unwavering dedication.

As luck would have it, while waiting for a date for the ultrasound scan, I had a routine appointment with Claire at Ninewells Maxillofacial department. Claire’s professionalism and genuine concern left a lasting impression. Although my scalp examination for skin cancer yielded no concerns, Claire asked about my overall health. I mentioned my visit to the GP and she asked if she could check the lump then asked Mr. Shekar, the consultant, for his opinion. Her decision to involve Mr. Shekar at this point was pivotal. Her attention to detail and proactive approach reassured me that I was in capable hands.

An appointment was made to see Mr Shekar to discuss the ultrasound results. He then organised a CT scan, MRI and an ultrasound fine needle aspiration. Mr. Shekar, a superb leader and a beacon of expertise, met with me soon after. Gathered in a room filled with compassion and competence, a team of clinicians discussed the results of my MRI scan, CT scan, and fine needle aspiration.

Mr. Shekar’s candid explanation resonated deeply: without treatment, it would be palliative care. The gravity of the situation sank in, and after a brief discussion with my wife and the team, I made the decision to undergo surgery followed by radiotherapy.

What followed was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The seamless coordination between multiple disciplines, each managing their own priorities while prioritising my care, was remarkable. The sheer number of clinicians involved in my care was astounding, and the leadership displayed was truly world-class.

Throughout my journey, I witnessed an organisation that embodies excellence. From the administrative staff to the surgical team, everyone contributed to my well-being. Their dedication transcended professional duty; it was a genuine commitment to saving lives and alleviating suffering. I am forever grateful for their tireless efforts.

Beyond the clinical excellence, it was the continual acts of kindness from everyone that had a profound impact on my state of mind. These gestures, both big and small, made a challenging journey more bearable and for that, I am deeply grateful.

As I continue my recovery, I carry with me the memory of compassionate faces, skilled hands, and unwavering support. To each member of the Ninewells team, please accept my heartfelt thanks. You are the unsung heroes who make miracles happen every day.

Dear camelopardaliscs75

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your cancer journey and in particular, the gratitude you have for the prompt action of your GP. Feedback is very valuable to all areas of the NHS, and I'm sure the staff at the practice will be delighted to hear that your experience there has been positive.

Unfortunately, GP practices are not part of Care Opinion at this time, as each practice is an independent business. So that they can see your feedback, we would recommend that you feedback your experience directly to the practice to allow this to be passed on to the staff. The Practice Manager can give you with details of how to provide this feedback to them, as per their Complaints and Feedback Policy.

With best wishes for your ongoing recovery
Victoria Sullivan
