"A big thank you to all from my aunt."

About: Whiteabbey Hospital / Ward 3 Rehabilitation Unit

(as a relative),

I asked my aunt what she would like to write about her care at Whiteabbey Hospital, both good and bad. She said she had nothing bad to say!

She had about 2 months of rehab after her stroke, came in using a hoist and a severe inattention to her left and left walking with a zimmer and reading books! So that speaks for itself.

She felt she’d received good attention, the Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists were wonderful, very encouraging. She particularly appreciated how the therapists explained everything to her so she understood the what she was being asked to do.

Everyone on the ward was very friendly, always cheerful - staff would just pop in to say hello. A big thank you to all from my aunt.

As a family we were reassured that she was in good hands when we had conversations with the therapists. The one thing we felt could have been better was communication with us as her family.  An introduction to next of kin of how the ward and rehab works, how family can be involved would have been mutually beneficial.

Unless we asked for information there was no updates from ward staff as to how she was getting on and planning together for discharge.  A good experience and outcome though

Many thanks for taking time to give feedback to us about your Aunt's experience and rehabilitation journey in Whiteabbey hospital. As Physiotherapy Services Manager it reinforces the importance of rehabilitation in a team environment. I am glad your Aunt had such a positive experience. We are always striving to improve services for those who use them and their families. To that end I will take your feedback about how we could improve communication and use that to support a project we are currently working on around communicating with families and service users.

Hello

My name is Janice Russell and I am the clinical lead physiotherapist for Whiteabbey ward. Thank you for taking the time to give such positive feedback and I will be sure to share with the team.

It can be difficult on a busy ward to keep all family members updated and I will pass on your suggestions to the team about how we might improve this

Janice Russell
