"Outstanding care with wisdom, compassion and humanity"

About: York Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I write to offer praise and thanks to the Ophthalmic Department at York Hospital and in particular Miss Wakely and her team, though the whole area, including administrative, nursing and medical care has been excellent.

I have recently had two operations for a detached retina and a third for oil removal. The second operation was required after the first did not succeed in holding the retina in place. It is now some months after the second operation, and I am very pleased to say all is good.

I feel I should add a little detail. In summer 2023 I experienced vision problems that were later diagnosed as due to Vitreomacular traction. Fortunately, this seemed to resolve itself without the need for intervention.

However, during late autumn I became aware of additional visual artefacts, and I contacted the ophthalmic dept. I was listened to carefully and with capable understanding by the nurse (I assume nurse) who arranged for an immediate examination. The assessment process was smooth, well managed and rapid, and arrangements were quickly made for a Vitrectomy operation with Mr Elazhary to take place on the same day.

The operation seemed to go well, and the follow-up appointment in January suggested all was well. Unfortunately, I later became aware that the shadow, which I knew indicated retinal movement, had returned and that I should take action.

I phoned early Jan and a helpful nurse arranged an appt for next day. This is the only unfortunate episode in an otherwise superb level of service. After the usual preparations I was given perhaps a too rapid and rather cursory visual examination, and a leaflet. I was told my symptoms were due to gas in the eye. I wanted to be reassured and so took the advice given, but I was disquieted. I knew really that the symptoms I presented did not correspond to that diagnosis.

By Friday, the dark shadow was considerably extended across my visual field close to the centre. I called the Ophthalmic department on Monday and was given a same day appointment. The assessment that followed confirmed the retina had peeled away considerably. Surgery with Miss Wakely was promptly arranged for the following day, Tue. Oil removal and follow up work have proceeded smoothly.

I write, not to give an account of my condition, but rather to note the care I have experienced from a dedicated staff. The nursing preparation team and the laser surgery team have been superb, unfailingly professional, reassuring and generous in their support throughout. There were many moments of thoughtful assessment and support from so many consultants and doctors. The nursing team took time to get things right, but to remain human and friendly, and the admin staff were welcoming and responsive.

The NHS is rarely out of the news for the challenges it faces in serving a reliant public. My experience has shown me what we already know and celebrate, that the individuals who work in this demanding profession remain dedicated, providing outstanding care with wisdom, compassion and humanity.

Thank you all
