"Poor basic care failed"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut)

(as a relative),

My relative was admitted to ward 104 after a very sudden diagnosis. They passed away very quickly but during their time spent in ward 104, lay in pain for hours on end with no one helping.

They was very uncomfortable and was lying with their feet crushed against the edge of her bed. No position changed for over 24hrs. They lay in the same nightgown for 2 days straight, no one had been in to wash them because they was too sore, yet no one would get them prescribed anything for the pain.

Family had to constantly ask the nurses and healthcare assistants to do the basic needs that we shouldn’t have to.

Although our relative's passing was extremely peaceful and we’re extremely grateful we got to spend that time with them, I can’t help but feel they was let down so badly by the ward.

Dear yellowst88,

Please accept my sincere apologies for your experience and our deepest sympathy on the passing of your family member.

I can imagine how upsetting this experience was for you and your family and it is certainly not the level of care that we would want our patients and their families to experience. Please be assured that I will discuss your concerns with the nursing team in ward 104 and their Nurse Manager.

If you would like to discuss further with me I am happy to have a conversation with you by phone or email if that is easier for you.

My direct contact details are catriona.robbins@nhs.scot or my direct line is 01224 550110.

Many thanks for raising your concerns at what must be a very difficult time for you, we are grateful that you have taken the time to do this so that as a team we can learn from your experience.

Kind regards

Catriona
