I recently attended my GP practice with some apprehension in regards to a few health concerns I have been experiencing, apprehensive due to a previous experience with a locum doctor a few years ago, which was anxiety provoking and unnecessary. My worries were further exacerbated as my practice is currently in the midst of merging with another practice. My name was called and it was an unfamiliar doctor, instantly I expected the worst. However, Dr McAlpine (who is one of the doctors from the new practice) was professional, reassuring, non-judgmental and thorough in his approach, a complete contrast to my previous experience with the locum doctor. Despite the assumed challenges of both practices merging, there was no evidence of any interruption to patient centred care as a result.
As part of the investigations into my presenting concerns, Dr McAlpine requested I attend for a phlebotomy appointment, which I was able to book with ease at the front reception at a time which worked around my work schedule. I attended the phlebotomist first thing this morning, again anxious due to almost all previous clinicians who have tried to obtain blood being unable without numerous attempts.
I was instantly put at ease when Rosaleen a HCSW/phlebotomist, called my name. I was greeted by a friendly smile and reassurance. I explained that most people have difficulty obtaining a blood sample however, unfazed, she went ahead and got it first time with relative ease. In addition to her fantastic phlebotomy skills, her warm and personable approach is really a credit to both her and the practice.
Furthermore, the receptionist in the Windmill Practice was also extremely helpful when I embarrassingly went to hand something in that should have gone elsewhere. Despite being in the wrong place, she took it and advised she would deal with it for me (Unfortunately, I didn't get her name).
As someone who works within the NHS, I feel it's incredibly important for people to be recognised for the hard work, professionalism and patient centred care they provide daily to patients, in a time where they are often over stretched and under resourced. Dr McAlpine, Rosaleen and the receptionist are all shining examples of how to treat patients with dignity and respect leading to better outcomes for patients. Thank you.
