"Making me feel uncomfortable"

About: Rampton Hospital / National High Secure Healthcare Service for Women

(as the patient),

The staff on our ward – Emerald patient

Staff are standing around the food hatch and some staff don’t even wear gloves to serve the food and I don’t like the idea of them breathing all over our food.

They are just touching our bread and food wish their hands.

When we are requesting certain foods from the menu, staff aren’t writing down what we have asked for and the extras that is left over the staff are eating the patients food.

The staff are also drinking our squash as well which is for the patients.

Night staff are really loud when we are trying to sleep.

Sometimes staff can come across really unprofessional and flirting with each other in front of us.

I keep being asked to go to my room to calm down even when I’m not a seg patient and when I’m not even angry.

The ward manager sticks up more for the staff then she does the patients. When we ask if our shopping has been delivered staff say they can’t go and have a look in the office and everything is going missing that goes in the office.

I can’t use the phone all the time because it is monitored, so they don’t let me make phone calls at all and when I ask for a stamp from the office, they either say they haven’t any or can’t get to it. I don’t like agree with patients being controlled over what snacks they can have. We are all adults and should be able to eat and drink what we want. Food and fluid charts, I don’t agree with them. It’s making us feel like we are being controlled and it’s making me feel like they are being controlling people.

The curtain falls from my door window, they aren’t putting it back up so I’m not getting my privacy.

Staff can see me, when on toilet and in the shower and it’s making me feel uncomfortable and also getting dressed and in the shower.

Thank you for meeting with myself, the Service Manager and Ward Manager to discuss these issues, we have managed to resolve some of these for you, give assurances about others, and to ensure that the concerns that you have put forward are thoroughly and independently followed up we have asked advocacy services to meet with you.

In terms of immediate actions, we have made clear to all staff the expectations around food service, and we will ensure that food service audits take place.

We were not able to identify when there had been any issues with food ordering or shopping, however we will ensure that we are really clear when there are foods on the menu that people can't order about why this is.

I have asked for more detail from you about behaviors on the ward across the 24 hour period and we will discuss further once I have this information to ensure that we are able to target support, training and supervision for the team.

In terms of snack availability you understood that for some people parameters have to be in place and that we also support people to make choices that are positive for them with the aim of people independently managing their health moving forward.

The curtain issue is now resolved, and the staff did respond quickly once this became an issue for you.

I will wait for the additional information that I need and we will keep talking, there was one thing that we both acknowledged, you have made a great deal of progress on Emerald and everyone wants that to continue.
